May 2025 Newsletter Hello, San Diego Rod and Reel Club Members. You blink, and now it’s May. Hopefully you’ve been working on your tackle. If you’ve been watching the boat reports, the bluefin are here! Not the jumbos so much, but there are lots of 40-to-80-lb. fish biting within one day range. Not much is happening at the Coronados, so even the full day boats have been taking shots above the border. Bonito have made a showing closer in, and not the little guys either. Jumbo bonito have shown up and they are biting. So if you’ve been lazy about getting your gear in shape, better get busy now. Rockfish have opened up, so we can go after the reds, goats (sheepshead), and assorted other rockfish. If you are on an overnight trip, you need a few outfits, say 20# to 40-50#. There are still anchovies in the receivers, but some are pretty large. As the weather warms up, sardines will start showing up. You’ll need an assortment of hooks from #4 up to #1/0 for sure. The day-and -a-half and longer boats are starting to find biting tuna within an easy 6080 mile range. The majority of the fleet has completed their maintenance, and everyone is ready to go out searching. As more boats go out, more water will be covered, and this will help everyone find the fish. Remember, those buggers have tails and they can move a surprisingly long distance from one day to the next! Get yourselves ready to get out and catch some fish!
