October 2023 Newsletter What a fun season this has been, with Yellowfin
and Bluefin in the mix (and not knowing for sure
which one you have yet!), Dorado (even if
they’re small!) and Yellowtail (big ones, too!).
Not to mention my own Personal Bests on
Halibut and Ling Cod! But, with our upcoming
tournament, I am certainly not sure what my PB
non-tournament fish is going to be this time.
Probably a huge rockfish that I can’t keep!!
We had a great charter aboard the Sea Watch,
especially with our new members who we finally
got to know as a result of the trip. Thang Nguyen,
Noli Gavino, Kimberly Zdanowicz and Shawn
Prioleau, and our newest members Jolene
Thompson and Kyoko Dollar. From what was
said to me, and from what I saw, they all had a
great time! We also had several guests on the
boat, and I am sure they have seen the value in
our club. I am hoping to see all of them at our
next meeting! Such a great group of people on
that trip, and everybody working together to
avoid super tangles! Sure, a couple here and
there, but a great team effort to avoid disasters!
Get ready for our Early Bird Membership
Drive for 2024. We are giving away a nice reel,
and the earlier you sign up, the better chance of
winning! If you renew in October, you get 3
raffle tickets with your name on it. If you wait
until November, you get 2 tickets, but then only
1 ticket if you sign up in December. The drawing
will be held at the December Holiday Party with
Awards Banquet. That’s your last chance to
squeeze in under the wire for the drawing!
Speaking of, our December meeting will be our
Holiday Party/Awards Banquet. This will
NOT be at the VFW Hall, but rather at the
Portuguese Hall in Point Loma. This will be held
on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:00 PM. Please
ink this date on your calendar!
The address for the Portuguese Hall is:
2818 Avenida de Portugal, San Diego, CA 92106.
We Take Kids Fishing:
If you weren’t at the last meeting (first things
first… you missed out!), we had a guest from
Earth Discovery Institute, Ashley Ersepke, who
spoke to us about their Family Fishing Day at
Santee Lakes. We will be assisting the kids with
their fishing rigs and techniques to catch their
very first fish! Please sign up at the October 5th
meeting. The event will be held on November
18th, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
I would like to thank Frank Santiago for putting
on a great presentation on Lobster Fishing at our
last meeting. I know everybody learned some
valuable tips, including rigging ideas and
gadgets. The season opens Friday, September
29th at 6:00 PM. Please see insert for all the new
changes in the rules.
Our speaker on October 5th will be Carl Schmidt
from Fisherman’s Landing, who always puts on a
great presentation!
